Onaway Area Schools Operating Millage Renewal Passes: The Power of Collective Action for Community Good
ONAWAY, Mich. – In a significant victory for the Onaway community, the 2024 Operating Millage Renewal for Onaway Area Schools has passed by nearly a two thirds margin, ensuring continued funding essential for our students’ education and future. This millage renewal, a product of the school aid funding formula set by Proposal A in 1994, will generate approximately $3.2 million annually for the school.
The success of this renewal is a testament to the collective efforts of the Onaway schools community, the importance of quality public education, and overcoming political differences for the greater good. The passage of this millage was critical, as the failure to secure these funds would have been devastating for our schools, affecting programs, staff, and the overall quality of education.
Community First
Onaway has been a community struggling with political divisions, particularly when it comes to school issues. Throughout this process, however, community members have shown remarkable dedication and a shared commitment to our children’s future. This renewal will continue to support vital educational programs, maintain facilities, and ensure that our students have access to the resources they need to thrive.
A Collaborative Effort
Up North Advocacy is proud to have played a role in this community effort. Our organization has worked tirelessly alongside various community members, emphasizing the importance of this millage for the well-being of our schools and, ultimately, our community. We have seen firsthand the power of collaboration and the positive impact it can have on our region.
Kalvin Carter, director of Up North Advocacy and a 1999 graduate of Onaway Schools, expressed his gratitude: “We are thrilled to see the community come together to support Onaway schools. This millage renewal is a critical component of our educational system, and its passage ensures that OAS students will continue to receive the quality education they deserve. As an alum of Onaway Schools, being able to give back to my alma mater through working on this initiative has been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful to everyone who contributed to this effort and demonstrated that, despite political differences, we can unite for the common good.”
Linda Wiseley, the on-the-ground community organizer for Up North Advocacy in the Onaway area, highlighted the community’s efforts: “The way our local community members teamed up to create and share positive and educational messages about the millage has been inspiring. This collective effort shows what we can achieve when we come together for a common cause. It has been a pleasure to work with such dedicated and passionate individuals.”
The formation of the OAS YES committee, in collaboration with Up North Advocacy and various other community stakeholders, played a crucial role in this success. Their efforts in spreading awareness and educating the public about the importance of the millage were instrumental in securing this victory. “When our school is in jeopardy, our community will always meet that challenge. Thank you OAS community!”, stated Les Nixon, OAS YES committee member.
Looking Forward
With this renewal, Onaway Area Schools can now focus on providing exceptional educational experiences, supporting teachers and staff, and maintaining facilities that foster a positive learning environment. This victory is not just a win for our schools but a win for the entire community.
